Controlling the Pet Population

The City of Portland encourages the spaying (females) and neutering (males) of all pets to help control overpopulation. A veterinarian can safely perform the procedures on a pet at around eight weeks of age. All pets adopted from the City's animal shelter are required to be spayed or neutered.

For more information about spaying and neutering, please view information from The Human Society of the United States.
