2010 Swim Lessons


The American Red Cross Swimming Program features many levels of Learn to Swim instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The program is designed to give students a positive learning experience. Participants must complete all skills as well as the exit skills test in each level before advancing to the next. All students will receive a prize and certificate at the end of each session. A minimum of 5 participants is required for each class to make. We reserve the right to cancel classes based on enrollment.

Registration begins Monday, March 29 at the Portland Community Center and will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Classes fill quickly, so register early.

Cost: $35.00 for 8lessons and a prize for each student.

Class Descriptions:


Tadpoles (ages 3 months to 2 years): Children work with a parent focusing on basic water and safety skills. Skills include, but are not limited to, water adjustment, floating on front and back, breath control and directions. 30 minute class.

Preschool-Starfish (ages 3-5 years): Children should be comfortable in the water without a parent. Skills involved in this class are water entry, submerging face and eyes in the water, opening eyes underwater, breath control as well as front and back floats. 30 minute class.

Preschool-Seahorses (ages 3-5 years): Experienced pre-school class continuing to work on primary water skills such as kicking, bubbles, floating, and pool entry. Introduction to beginning arm strokes and water safety. 30 minute class.

Level 1-Guppies (ages 6 years and up): Students enrolled in this class will learn skills such as kicking and gliding on front and back, beginning front and back crawl, breath control, floating and water safety skills. 45 minute class.

Level 2-Goldfish (ages 6 years and up): Goldfish will begin with a review of the Level 1 skills and build upon this foundation. Children will learn skills such as picking up objects from underwater with eyes open, treading water, finning, sculling and introduction to rhythmic breathing. 45 minute class.

Level 3-Dolphin (ages 6 years and up): The Dolphins will review their Level 2 skills and utilize this foundation to learn skills such as front and back glide, advanced front and back crawl, fundamentals of elementary backstroke and basic self-rescue skills. 45 minute class.

Level 4-Sharks (ages 6 years and up): Sharks will begin with a review of Level 3 skills then proceed to an introduction to the breast stroke and side stroke, butterfly, dives from a compact position, turns at the wall and familiarity with CPR skills. 45 minute class.

Pool Parties


Umbrella Parties:
Reserve the blue or red umbrella for your party which includes exclusive use of the blue umbrella with 6 tables or the red umbrella with 4 tables for 2 hours during general swim time. Bring your own food, cake and beverages. Registration for parties begins March 29, 2010. All registrations are made at the Portland Community Center.

The Portland Aquatic Center is available to rent for your special occasion! The cost includes exclusive use of the Portland Aquatic Center; lifeguard staff will be provided. Bring your own food, cake and beverages. Registration for summer and fall parties begins March 29, 2010.

Swim and Skate Parties:
Enjoy all the fun of our traditional after hour pool parties with the added bonus of the Skate Park. All skate park rules apply. All skaters must wear helmets. Food and drinks are not allowed in the Skate Park.

Available Saturday and Sundays only throughout the summer, May 29-August 22, 2010.

Cost: $300.00 up to 100 people, each additional 50 guests is $50 extra.

Full payment must be made at the time of reservation. Register for all aquatics programs and rentals at the Portland Community Center.



Water Fitness


AquaAttack:
Aerobic kickboxing is one of the hottest new workouts worldwide. It’s energizing, powerful, uplifting and a fun and effective way to burn calories and tone your muscles. The water’s resistance cushions and slows the explosive kicks and punches. This not only helps prevent injuries but the added resistance strengthens
and tones the muscles for an effective workout. Classes will begin in May.

Aquacise:
Aquacise, taught by US Water Fitness Association Certified Instructor Kristi Aquil, provides a high intensity water workout. Focus on cardio conditioning and strengthen all major muscle groups. Exercises are performed in 5 or more feet of water and goggles are required. Classes are held year round and registration is ongoing at the Portland Aquatic Center.

Lap Swim:
Lap swimming is an excellent workout for everyone from the aquatic enthusiast to the occasional swimmer. The Aquatics staff encourages individuals to keep fit by swimming, so we reserve a portion of each pool for lap swimming. One lap lane is dedicated to swimming laps during general swim hours. Swimmers must be able to swim the full length of the pool continuously without support.

Multiple programs at our facility may affect the number of lap lanes available. Lap swim is available year round, please see our seasonal hours for more information. Regular admission fees apply.

Bay's Edge Aquatic Team is a non-profit locally owned swim team with a vision to inspire and enable members to achieve excellence in the sport of swimming and in life.
