Application Requirements for Fire Fighter
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must meet the job description requirements for a Portland Fire Department Fire Fighter.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be certified as a basic structural fire fighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
- Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician by the Texas Department of Health.
- Must possess a high school diploma or G.E. D.
- Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and pass the Class B fire fighter’s exemption within the first 12 months of hire.
- Must be in good physical condition, weight in proportion to height.
- Must score a minimum of 70% on the written examination.
- Must pass the Physical Agility Examination.
- Must successfully pass an investigation of personal history and background to determine suitability for the position of fire fighter with the Portland Fire Department.
- Must pass a drug screening examination.
- Must pass an oral interview board.

PLACE: Fire Station 2
DRESS: Candidates should wear work trousers (jeans but loose fitting with a belt is preferable). Shorts are not recommended. Some type of T-shirt with a shirt or jacket if the weather is cool. Tennis shoes or rubber-soled sports shoes (no cleats) are required.
ANY CANDIDATE DRESSED INAPPROPRIATELY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE TESTING.
The physical agility test is designed to simulate the tasks fire fighters are required to perform during emergency situations and immediately after the emergency has been contained. There are two phases in the test. Each phase has a time limit and the test must be completed within the established time limit for each phase. The test will be conducted at Fire Station 2 or area approved by the Chief. You will be required to wear a turnout coat, helmet and self-contained breathing apparatus during the test. Phase 2 will begin 3 minutes after you have completed Phase 1. Each phase consists of a series of tasks that must be performed in a specified, continuous sequence. A description of the specific tasks for each phase is presented below:

Phase 1
- You will be issued a standard fire department turnout coat and helmet. You will then be assisted in donning a standard fire department self-contained breathing apparatus and mask.
- Timing begins here. Pull one end of a 1 1/2 –inch uncharged hose line preconnected with a nozzle a distance of 150 feet from the engine.
- Drag a 1 1/2 –inch charged hose line a distance of 100 feet around a car to the back of the station.
- Maneuver a 1 1/2 –inch charged hose line a distance of 25 feet through the station and around objects.
- Make four continuous trips of 100 feet each way from the engine to the station while carrying an object weighing approximately 50 pounds ( power fan, roof ladder, extinguisher)
- Make three threaded hydrant connections
- Carry a Quickie saw a distance of 50 feet and place onto a platform.
Timing ends when the saw is placed on the platform.

Phase 2
- Timing begins here. Lift and carry a bundle of wet, rolled 2 1/2 –inch hose a distance of 100 feet and place on the engine tailboard.
- Lift, one at a time, four bundles of wet, rolled 2 ½-inch hose from the ground and place on the engine hose bed.
- Remove, one at a time, four bundles of wet, rolled 2 ½-inch hose from the engine hose bed and place on the ground.
- Hoist one 50-foot length of wet 2 ½ inch hose to the top of the station.
- Lift, one at a time, four bundles of rolled 2 ½ inch hose from the ground and place on the engine company tailboard. Lift, one at a time, seven bundles of rolled 1 1/2 –inch hose from the ground and place on the upper part of a platform. Timing ends when the seventh bundle has been placed on the platform.
