Public InformationRequirements for Fire Fighter

Committed to Excellence Delivered with Pride

Created in 1943, the Portland Fire Department serves a population of over 18,500 people. Our department consists of three 24 hour shifts, with four firefighters per shift. Each engine company is staffed with a captain, engineer, and two tailboards; with at least one firefighter certified to the paramedic level onboard. The Fire Department provides Fire, EMS, Rescue, and Hazardous Material protection on a 24-hour per day basis to the citizens of Portland. We strive to minimize the dangers to life and property from the hazards that can arise each day in our city through fire safety education, fire prevention inspections, investigations, fire control operations, and continuous training in the fields of EMS, Hazardous Materials, and Rescue.

The Portland Fire Department is equipped with two engine companies, an aerial ladder truck, water tanker, brush truck, and a Haz-Mat Response trailer.
